Who are we?
The British Embassy in The Hague is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is seeking to recruit a full - time International Liaison Assistant. A vacancy has arisen in Home Office International Operations.
Main purpose of job:
An International Liaison Assistant’s (ILA) duties requires the ability to work flexibly as part of small team, with a determination to succeed and be able to prioritise your workload with the minimum of supervision whilst using your own initiative. The successful candidate will need to have strong inter-personal skills and be able to forge excellent working relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders. A key focus of the team is to ensure that passengers travelling to the UK are correctly documented, and to intercept passengers who attempt to circumvent the UK immigration laws by travelling with forged documents. The team also provides training and support on risk and forgery and works with host authorities and other stakeholders to combat organised immigration crime.
Roles and responsibilities:
- Provide administrative and organisational support to the International Liaison Manager and International Liaison officers as necessary.
- Maintain risk databases, including substantial data entry and related background research.
- Diary management, monitoring incoming requests and outgoing appointments and ensuring the team are aware of diary commitments
- Prepare and monitor statistics and statistical reports.
- Liaise with internal and external stakeholders including Embassy colleagues, airlines and local Law Enforcement across the Benelux region.
- Organise regional travel, training sessions and internal/external meetings/events.
- Flexibly support the team and wider Embassy network as and when required.
Our ideal Candidate shows:
- Fluent written and spoken English and Dutch (minimum C1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages);
- Strong written and verbal communication skills;
- Experience in administrative work, data analysis and/or reporting.
- Ability to analyse information from a number of sources in different formats and produce related reporting within published guidelines and timeframes;
- IT literacy, a good knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Power Point;
- Able to prioritise work effectively without close supervision and also work as a member of a team;
- Flexibility. Occasionally the position may require the job holder to work extended hours or work flexibly, sometimes at short notice.
Nice to have:
- Excellent French – both spoken and written;
- Experience or knowledge of working in an international/ multilateral environment;
- Basic knowledge of UK Government/Civil Service Structures;
- Experience or knowledge of the travel/aviation industry;
The successful candidate will initially be offered a full-time 12 months employment contract at AO level. The base salary for this position is 3,362.93 € gross per month based on a working week of 36 hours. An 8% holiday allowance is payable on a pro rata basis. The successful candidate will receive a monthly tax free contribution to travel, and a tax free working from home allowance if working from home is possible for the role. In addition, the Embassy currently applies a performance-based bonus pay model for local staff.
Visa/work permit requirements: Applicants must hold the independent right to live and work in The Netherlands and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract. Please note that it is your responsibility to ensure you meet the legal requirements to live and work in The Netherlands. The successful candidate will be required to provide a BSN (citizen service number) on their start date and will need to arrange and pay for their own travel and accommodation, as well as any other living costs.
The successful candidate will undergo a professional background check; Any job offer is also provisional to a successful security clearance check.

Under the terms of the UK/NL Double Taxation Convention (Article 18 1(b)(ii), UK nationals who move to The Netherlands to take up their new role at the Embassy/Consulate and UKB spouse who start working at the Embassy with no previous record of working in the Netherlands since the arrival of the UKB partner they accompany, will be placed on a tax abated salary if deemed to be eligible for Dutch income tax exemption on their salary. Qualifying staff will have no Dutch income tax levied on their salary and will therefore be paid an abated salary reduced by the applicable tax they would have had to pay if that local liability had existed. A tax abated salary ensures a fair and comparable take home pay. Staff on tax abated salaries cannot claim tax benefits in The Netherlands but they are fully and comprehensively covered for social security and deemed to be resident local staff for all intents and purposes.
